A Visit From Irish Water!

Posted on November 25, 2022 by 5th & 6th Class Posted in School News

On Wednesday, the 23rd of November, Damien Phelan from Irish Water came and talked about water. He explained how the water goes from the rivers to our glasses! He did some experiments that showed 1 of the parts of getting river water filled with mud, rock and sand into perfectly drinkable water. He showed us his PowerPoint Presentation with some videos in there! They take water from lakes, rivers and seas through pipes to get to factories to take out bad stuff like mud, rock and sand.

The New Classroom

Posted on October 21, 2022 by 5th & 6th Class Posted in Blog, School Archives, School News

We are getting a new classroom. During the last week of September, the builders arrived and started to get ready for the foundation. Two weeks ago, they finished the foundation and put in the pillars. Last week, they poured concrete over the foundation. They recently started to build the wall around the new classroom. We had a look outside and there was a JCB and a cement mixer and a load of blocks and insulation foam. Right now, the workers are putting in the insulation under the floor. The building is looking good so far. There will be an update after or before Christmas.

Chocolate Biscuit Cake Recipe

Posted on October 12, 2022 by 5th & 6th Class Posted in Blog, School Archives, School News

You will need:

Baking Tin, Greaseproof Paper, Spatula/mixing spoon

Ingredients:

  • 275g Dairygold Baking Butter
  • 150ml Lyle’s Golden Syrup
  • 400g Dairy Milk Chocolate
  • 200g McVitie’s Digestives
  • 200g McVitie’s Rich Tea
  • 1 pack of Maltesers/Crunchie/Mars
  • Marshmallows Optional

Method:

  1. Line a baking tin with greaseproof paper.
  2. Melt the butter, syrup & 200g chocolate over a low heat.
  3. Crush the biscuits and add to the melted mixture.
  4. Add all other ingredients and stir well.
  5. Leave to cool and then transfer to baking tin. Press it in well.
  6. Melt another 200g chocolate, pour on top and place in fridge to set.

Today, we made this recipe for our Procedural Writing. We followed all the steps and made sure we had good handwriting. As we were writing it in to our hard back copy, our teacher Mrs. Dynan was making the cake at the front of the classroom. We then helped to crush the biscuits and stir the mixture. Around three hours later, we all got to eat it. It was the best chocolate biscuit cake we have ever had.

IZAK9 Maths Cubes

Posted on September 23, 2022 by 5th & 6th Class Posted in Blog, School News

IZAK9 is a maths game that uses 27  different cubes and lots of different maths challenges. All the classes in our school will be using the cubes this year.

You divide into three groups; red, green and purple. You go to IZAK9’s website and listen to the challenges for your class. Some of them are simple and some you’ll need a pen and paper.

IZAK9 is maths but very fun and it encourages you to work together and discuss answers with your teammates. One of the first challenges we tried was called ABC123. We had to build a wall with numbers in alphabetical order and another one multiplication.

An  interesting game  was ‘Rebuild’. It’s a game where you have to rebuild the cube and the whole class works together to rebuild it in the correct way. You work together to rebuild the shapes on all the sides. You can go against other classes for example 3rd v.s 4th.Your team has to get all the answers correct before the other class. I give IZAK9 a 10/10 but what do you give it?

This week in 5th and 6th Class we were learning about the European Union (EU). There are 27 member states in the European Union and luckily, there are 27 students in 5th and 6th class so everybody got a Country from the European Union. We each had to fill out information about the Countries in the European Union. We learned the Capital, Currency, Languages, Population, Rivers, Mountains and famous Landmarks of each of the countries.

Here are the European Countries and their Capitals:

  • Slovakia (Bratislava)
  • Estonia (Tallinn)

  • The European Union covers 4.5 million square kilometres and has a population of about 450 million people. Only China and India have a larger population than the combined EU Countries.
