Keeling’s Competition Entry

Posted on September 13, 2019 by Amy Posted in School News

Congratulations to Eabha McDowall whose competition entry was chosen by the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on TodayFm to go into the draw to win €10,000 for our school. We all waited patiently this morning to hear the phone ring. There was great excitement in the yard and Eabha was waiting right beside the phone! Friday the 13th was not our day unfortunately but we are very proud of Eabha and think you will all agree her poem was excellent. Well done Eabha!

Keeling’s for Killeen – Eabha McDowall

€10,000! What would it mean to our school?
We pondered and questioned- what would be cool?
With our teacher’s help, we discussed and debated.
Killeen National School’s fate… awaited!

In 1926, Keelings planted the seed.
They taught us that ‘homegrown’ was the way to lead,
From rhubarb to cherries, fruit galore,
Keelings provides homegrown produce instore.

So, for Killeen we considered, inspired by Keelings
As a ‘green school’ we are aware of our feelings
To reduce, reuse, recycle for our world
The idea of a Polytunnel unfurled.

The Irish climate can be harsh and severe,
A Polytunnel would nurture and protect our plantings here.
To produce ourselves is where our future lies,
Instead of depleting the environment’s supplies.

Our carbon footprint will be light, we’ll carefully tread,
So the next generation will learn and be fed.

On September 27th Ian, don’t you know…
We’ll all be ready for the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show
The community will rally from far and near
Ian, you and the team would be welcome here!
